Why I wore red lipstick to my mammogram.

A few years ago I watched a Lifetime movie called “Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy.”  It was about a young woman fighting for her life against breast cancer, and red lipstick gave her the courage to undergo the surgery to take a piece of her womanhood in order to save her life.

Yesterday, as I prepared to go in for my mammogram, all I could think was that I needed red lipstick too.

A week before, I went in for my yearly doctor’s visit, and my doctor found a lump and wanted me to get an immediate mammogram and sonogram.  Due to going out of town for a week for work, I wasn’t able to get tested until yesterday.  So for a week, I tried not to worry about it and trust that God had me in His hands.  The worry wart I am, I did really good all week keeping it far from my mind, until yesterday as I prepped to go in for the tests.  All of a sudden it hit me…. here I am again… 5 years ago, I had the same scare, which turned out to be negative… but at that time, it was 3 years after my mom survived breast cancer and a mastectomy and 1 year before my dad found out he had lung cancer which would go on to take his life the following year.

All of a sudden, yesterday morning, all the fears rushed in… the reminder of my family history… the stories I hear about other women around my age whose life got taken by cancer…. the struggle between having faith for God’s healing and accepting the reality of science… as I stood in the bathroom getting ready, I became crippled in fear and ran back to my bed with my dog in hand, and threw the covers back over us…. I wasn’t ready to face the answer to the tests…

Stephen found me back in bed and jumped in with me.  He held me in his arms and said all the perfect loving things I needed to hear from my husband in that moment.  He promised me at the altar that he would always be my protector, and in that moment, he lived up to his vow.

We finally got up, and I tried take 2 of getting ready.  Before heading out the door, I grabbed my bold red lipstick and with it, smeared on courage.

After going through the tests, the radiologist finally eased my worries.  He said I have two suspicious spots but that they were just benign lymph nodes and nothing to worry about.  He said he wants to see me back in 6 months just to make sure nothing is growing or changing, but otherwise, I was good and healthy.

::Big sign of relief::

Even though I tend to work myself up, I’m glad I’m staying on top of it.  I share this today with you because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but also, to encourage you to stay on top of things yourself.  I’ve seen cancer creep up too many times in the lives of loved ones, and I hope my story can help motivate you to get your regular check up too.  When my mom had breast cancer, I tried at age 24 to get a mammogram and no one would listen to me.  It wasn’t until age 27 when my doctor found a lump and they finally let me get one.  And now at age 31, the health world still thinks I’m too young, but you just have to push through and fight for your right to be screened.  It’s not just older ladies that get breast cancer, young women get it all the time too… you are never too young to be proactive in looking out for your health.

Fight like a girl… and win.

Thanks for sharing! This stuff is scarey! I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and I had it taken out this year. Doctors didn’t want to do anything about my “lump in the throat’” but I was insistant. Glad yours came out with good results! Also, hope you know to request a Thyroid shield when you get mammogran? They won’t offer, but have them readily available. They gave me paper stating that mammograms don’t cause cancer, but it’s printed by the College of Radiology, kind of like the tobacco companies saying it’s safe to smoke. Not meaning to rant, but want to get other’s informed. Sometimes it’s the lesser of the evil, but it’s good to know.

I’m so glad that you got a good report! Many prayers were going up for you yesterday. I loved your statement about “the struggle between having faith for God’s healing and accepting the reality of science.” That is SO true during moments like this. What a blessing to have a supportive husband and that promise of “sickness and health,” no matter what. Hugs!

So glad the lumps are benign! And well done for being brave :)
I really need to book mine, the forms are on my fridge as a reminder!

I am so happy to hear that everything is OK with you Scarlett. You have been in my thoughts & prayers since yesterday. Your experience has given me more courage and peace to face my mammograms tomorrow. And, I agree that all ladies need to be proactive and have mammograms, even before they are recommended. My insurance pays 100% of all mammograms and there is not an age restriction. You just have to ask your doctor to request that you receive one. Early detection is the best way to beat Cancer, and I encourage every woman out there to go for regular check ups and mammograms.

Published in Weddings Illustrated Magazine! // Miami Wedding Photographer

While it’s always an honor to get our photography published, we get more excited for our clients who have the opportunity to have their wedding showcased.  I know our brides put a lot of their time and thoughts into creating the perfect wedding day they’ve always dreamed of, so it’s exciting when all their hard work is able to be shared with others for inspiration.  We absolutely adored photographing Shara & Vinnie’s Miami wedding at the Villa By Barton G in South Beach.  Every detail was so glamorous and elegant, and it’s featured in this month’s Weddings Illustrated magazine.

Andrea & Rich are married! // The Cloister Sea Island Wedding Photographer

Andrea and Rich grew up in the same Massachusetts hometown, yet their paths had never overlapped due to a 4 year age difference.  Then one night during a weekend home from college, Andrea ran into Rich at a bar and they’ve been attached at the hip ever since.  Seven years later, Andrea went on a ski trip with Rich’s family and while on one of Rich’s favorite winding ski runs, Rich proposed amongst with the beautiful white backdrop.

“I was amazed that he was actually able to surprise me,” Andrea said. “I was one of those girls that had been trying to figure out when he was going to propose for the past few months. Until I skiied down the trail and turned a corner to see him standing in his skis with his gloves off, I was totally oblivious!”

Just like how the ski trails can bring unexpected surprises, for Andrea & Rich’s wedding day, there was a little postponing involved.  They were originally supposed to be married back in May of this year, but due to some health complications that happened just weeks before the wedding, they knew it would be less stressful to postpone things to the fall.  But as everything works out as it should, they found out their original day was covered in dark clouds and rainstorms vs. their new day, it was nothing but sunshine.  For this New York couple, their love story proves everything happens for a reason, and they’ve already conquered the part of their vows, “through sickness and health.”

Here’s our favorite shots from their gorgeous day!

Liz Anne & Reed are engaged! /// Fernandina Beach Wedding Photographer

For Liz Anne & Reed, their love story goes beyond the two of them.  It also includes their 3 year old son Ammons who is their greatest joy in life.  But first, their love story begins 10 years ago when Liz Anne & Reed first met at a bar.  Reed introduced himself to Liz Anne but she quickly brushed him off.  Liz Anne swears she doesn’t remember this moment, but a few weeks later, what she does remember is that she saw him playing in a band and just had to meet him! “His voice is no doubt a gift from Heaven,” Liz Anne said. “Watching him on stage is mesmerizing.”

Fast forward 10 years, and Reed took Liz Anne for a “birthday celebration” earlier this year.  He blind folded her and took her to their favorite “restaurant” which turned out to be a breathtaking lake view at their lake house which had music playing in the background, a champagne bottle, dozens of floating candles in the lake, chocolate covered strawberries and more.  He gave her a birthday card, and while she was reading it, Reed got down on one knee and presented her a gorgeous ring asking him to marry her!  ”Reed was so overtaken by emotion it was hard for him to get the question out,” Liz Anne described. “I said YES!”  And within minutes, their son Ammons appeared dressed in a bow tie and a bouquet of roses ready to join the celebration!

For their engagement session, they didn’t want it to just be about the two of them, they wanted it to include the three of them, so this engagement session is partly a family session as well.  Here’s some of our favorites below!

Introducing my decor diaries!

It just kind of happened.

I originally blogged here about our office makeover.  Then my email, phone and text messages all started buzzing with friends and family telling me I needed to start a decorating blog.  Really?  Me?  I’m certainly no expert, but it IS a fun creative outlet for me… so I thought…. why not????

I explain more over on the new blog at www.TheDecorDiaries.com, so you can read the rest of the story there.  ALSO, I’m planning a bunch of fun “Glam Give-A-Ways” for the grand opening of this blog, so be sure to check it out all the fun ways you can win!

Also, just to clarify, this new blog is in NO WAY replacing this blog… it’s just an additional fun outlet for me to post about girly things that have nothing to do with our photography business.  :-)
